it has a oil passage in it to lube the bearing
if the seal goes bad it can leak oil in the intake
or even worse start to run on the oil and the engine rev out of control ("engine over speed" or 'run away" are common terms to describe this condition)
also check the crank case breather , i believe the return goes onto the intake as well
this will be a tube form one of the valve covers to the intake if your model has it</description>
